JEE 2013 Cut-Offs Announced

For students aspiring to get into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), CBSE's class XII results this year are important, as for the first time, weightage is being given to these scores to determine admission.

A student has to be in the top 20 percentile of CBSE board exam scorers to be eligible to apply to IITs. Up until last year, a student only had to have scores of 60 per cent or above. For NITs, the school board scores will form 40 per cent of the admission criteria and performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will account for the rest.

However, relieved IIT aspirants said, the cut-offs for the JEE, which were announced on Monday - shortly after CBSE declared its class XII results - are relatively better than last year's.

The top 20 percentile cut-off for the JEE is 391 for general categories this year. For other backward classes (OBCs) it is 389, for scheduled castes 350, and 338 for scheduled tribes, officials said.

Ramesh Nitin, a student who scored 450, said he was thankful the cut-off was reasonable. "When we first found out that we had to be in the top 20 percentile, it was a scary prospect. We weren't sure how much we needed to score to qualify for admission. But 391 is quite attainable as it is only around 78 per cent," he said.

"A cut-off of 391 is not at all difficult to obtain. Most students, especially IIT aspirants, would have got a score of over 450," said K.K. Anand, a JEE trainer.

JEE Students File Petition against CBSE-Unhappy with Results

15 IIT JEE (Main) aspirants seem to be unhappy with their results. Recently, after the results were announced on 7th of May, many students claimed that they found mistakes in their score cards.

Moreover, they also raised complaints that the released JEE Main (IIT Joint Entrance exam) scores are not matching with the scores what they had predicted to be.

As a result, 15 students have come forward to file a petition against CBSE over the mistakes in their results. They have moved to the Delhi High Court against CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) which is responsible for conducting the JEE Main Examination.

The petition says "The respondents provided no mechanism to redress the grievances of petitioners who have secured a much higher score according to the solutions of prominent coaching institutions, but will be deprived of sitting in the JEE (Advanced) Exam 2013 being conducted by the CBSE as well as getting admission in any reputed engineering college, only because of institutional arrogance of respondents who have chosen to either not respond to the pleas of mercy or replied in an arbitrary and mechanical manner with patent absence of application of mind."

Students of JEE Main 2013 had recently mentioned that the board is not providing the answer keys to question sheets. As a result, the supreme court had ordered CBSE to provide the so called answer keys as soon as possible.

Following the order the CBS has hereby decided to charge a fee of Rs.500/- for each candidate to get the answer keys, photo copy of OMR sheet and Calculation sheet. According to the notification The candidates may apply for the same along with the requisite fee on or before June 15th, 2013.

The students, who have come together, will be represented by senior advocate Chetan Sharma. However, around 10 other students have planned to file interventions in the Delhi HC and ask that the admission process be stayed till the result calculation issue is solved.
