Cut-offs for IIT Admissions this year likely to Slide

PUNE: An extremely harsh marking system with two negative marks for wrong answers for over 50% of the questions in the joint entrance examination (JEE) advanced paper on Sunday may see an all-time low in the cut-offs for this year's entrance to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Overall, students who took the exam found the maths paper tougher than chemistry and physics, while both papers were reported to be lengthy.

Over 800 candidates from Pune appeared for this examination which was conducted in two sessions for two papers on Sunday. Candidates who clear this test will get a seat in one of the 17 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The results will be declared on June 18.

The advanced exam had two papers conducted in two sessions, in the morning and at noon. Each paper had 60 questions with 264 marks for Paper I and 240 marks for Paper II. The total marks for the advanced exam was 504 and open category students scoring 176 marks (35%) would be awarded a rank.

Education expert Durgesh Mangeshkar while analysing the paper said the marking system was extremely tough this year and it will surely reflect on the final results. Mangeshkar said, "Out of the 120 questions, 66 had negative marking. These 66 questions were multiple-answer questions and usually, for such questions the IIT would cut either one mark or nothing. However, cutting two marks for every wrong answer is a bit harsh on students."

The 66 multiple answer questions had more than one right answer, so if a student ticks just one or two right answers for a question that has three right answers among the options, then he/she would get two negative marks. In the past, for these questions, the IIT either gave zero negative marks or cut just one mark for a wrong answer. However, the two negative marks cut this year was unsettling.

Sarvesh Shah, a student who attempted the exam, said, "While the questions other than negative marks were easier, they were subjective. I am banking on them. I had to attempt the paper more cautiously than I thought."

Karthik Mahesh, another student who scored 317 marks in the mains examination, said, "I attempted the easier questions first. Some questions in maths were tough, but I attempted all the questions that did not have negative marking."

Vaibhav Bakliwal, who runs a coaching institute for IIT preparation, said, "The marking scheme was very strange this time and it will sharply reflect on the final results. The total marks also increased from 360 last year to 504 this year. Due to this type of marking, the scoring will be low and students who score 380 marks and above will be in top 100 ranks."

Aakash Chaudhry, director of Aakash Educational Services, said, "Overall, the paper was of moderate difficulty as compared to previous years. Out of the three subjects, mathematics portion had lengthier calculations. Paper I was more theoretical as is the case usually. An average student would have been able to attempt the questions with reasonable effort. Paper I did see some drift in the question pattern."

Nasty JEE surprise: Negative marks of 2 with 50% questions

MUMBAI: JEE (Advanced), conducted on Sunday, had a surprise in store. Half the questions in papers I and II put together carried negative marking of two. It applied on section II of paper I and sections II and III of paper II. Negative marking is a feature of JEE, but it has never exceeded one mark in recent years.

On Sunday, students said most multiple-choice questions had negative marking. Also, the paper was tougher than last year. Teachers said it was conceptually strong and well-balanced, though not very student-friendly. They said many students may not have attempted some questions, fearing negative marks. Considering all factors, cut-offs may dip this year. Over 1.2 lakh students took the test.

Devansh Shah, a student of PACE Junior College, said, "Though there was no major change in the pattern, the marking scheme made the paper tougher." An IIT-Bombay official said, "Ranks are relative, so the difficulty level of the question paper will not have a negative impact."

VVN Acharya, the physics HOD of a coaching institute, said the IITs rarely deduct two marks for a wrong answer. "I remember that one of the years the IITs had similar negative marking pattern was 2006."

Aakash Chaudhry, director of a national coaching institute, said, "Paper II was much easier than paper I and all questions were straightforward, involving less calculations in the physics section. But passage-based questions had multiple correct answers with negative marking."

Ramesh Batlish, from another coaching institute, said, "Because of negative marking in multiple choice questions, students found the paper to be lengthy."

Negative marks in IIT-JEE for aspirants

Chennai: Students who appeared for the IIT joint entrance examination this year, conducted on Sunday, were disappointed as there was 50 per cent negative marking and the total marks for the examination conducted was 504, against the 360 that is awarded every year.

According to some students, last year, there was no negative marking for paper-I, which was for 180 marks. But, this year, except for the first eight questions, there was negative marking for every other question.

Most of them found Mathematics in paper-I to be tough and lengthy, compared to Chemistry and Physics. Students found paper-II to be relatively easier than paper-I but Physics was tough. Paper-I and II taken together were given total marks of 360 till last year. But, this time, the division of marks was 264 for paper-I and 240 for paper-II, totaling 504.

The marking pattern was such that plus four marks are awarded for correct answers and minus two for incorrect answers. Therefore, if there is a mistake, one goes down by six marks.

S. Abhiram, a student of Modern senior secondary school in Velachery, said it is because of the drastic change in pattern this year that he found the exam difficult — especially Maths.

"There was no single answer but all multiple choices and there was negative marking. Therefore, it means a person has to know all the answers - only then can he attempt it. The multiple choices required more time," he said. Yet, he is confident of getting through. For Abhik Biswas, a student from Chennai public school in Anna Nagar, the question paper was unexpected.

"I went through the question papers for 2008 and 2009 which were tough. But this year’s paper was the toughest. For 10 minutes I went blank. On top of it, negative marking was worrisome," he said. His mother, Ratna Biswas, said he had been working hard for the past two years for IIT but is really disappointed with this year’s paper.

K.K. Anand, founder of a training centre called Smart (Science and Mathematics of Academy for Real Talents) said, “IIT has the habit of changing patterns every year but 50 per cent negative marking is unheard-of which kind of panicked the students. But the students should also be psychologically prepared to face the surprise. They should have the capability to accept the challenge.”

Aakash Chaudhry, director of Aakash Institute, said of the three subjects in paper-I, Mathematics had long calculations. It was more theoretical rather than application based.

Tips and Tricks to Crack JEE-Advanced 2015 Exam

The JEE Advanced is scheduled to be held on May 24. The examination is conducted for admissions into IITs and ISM Dhanbad. The exam will be conducted in two parts, from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

With less than two weeks to go, here are a few last minute tips and tricks to help the students prepare well:

1. Concentrate on the topics that you have already covered and about which you are confident. Trying to learn new topics at this time will only waste time and lower your confidence.

2. Prepare a revision timetable and study during the last days before the exam according to this schedule.

3. Decide beforehand how much time you will spend on each section. Work this out according to your strengths and weaknesses, however, make sure to not favour the sections you like as the cut-off for all subjects must be cleared.

4. It is a good idea to revise all the formulas and difficult problems for each subject.

5. Don't try group studies in the last two weeks. The build-up of anxiety and stress will be more within a group, and it is bound to influence you.

6. Practice from question banks. Take a good question bank which has solutions as well, so you can check your mistakes. Also, practice with the past years' IIT JEE papers, this would give you an idea about the upcoming JEE Advanced.

7. While attempting mock papers try and pace yourself, so that on the day of the exam you have an estimation of how much time will you take for each section.

8. It would be better if you set a target score range for yourself and practice according to that. This would help you work on your strong areas and make it easier for you to achieve the score for which you're aiming.

9. When you get the exam paper on the day of JEE Advanced, do not start attempting it blindly. Read the entire question paper carefully and identify your strong and weak points. Then begin with the easier questions which carry more marks and move on to the more difficult questions.

10. Above all, be sure to remain calm and not let the stress get to you. Take frequent breaks and relax your mind. In order to do well in the exam, your mind needs to be stress-free.
