Zero or Even Negative JEE Score Enough for Engineering Admission?

NAGPUR: Ever since the Maharashtra government declared that the admissions to first year engineering courses would be conducted through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) from 2014-15 academic session, there is a lot of confusion among the aspirants on eligibility criteria.

Mumbai-based Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) that conducts the admissions has clarified that even candidates scoring zero or negative marks in JEE would be eligible but they needed to score at least 50% aggregate (45% for reserved category) in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) group in their board exams. Till last year, the admissions were made through MHT-CET and any non-zero score was enough.

New Eligibility Norms for Engineering Admissions:

* Candidates must appear JEE Mains
* Even zero or negative score in JEE would be enough
* JEE Advanced score would not be taken into account
* Should score at least 50% marks in PCM (45% for SC/ST) in board exam
* 50% weightage each for JEE and PCM marks (board) while preparing merit list
* Admission to autonomous colleges also to be made through JEE score
DTE to conduct four rounds and no separate round for autonomous colleges

JEE (Main) 2014: Plea for the 'Re-Conduct' of the Entrance Exam to be Heard at HC on May-09

A PIL seeking to restrain the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) from conducting engineering entrance examinations on the basis of JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced), 2014 and pointing at re-conduct JEE (Main), 2014 within a week's time is scheduled for a hearing at the Delhi High Court on May 9, reported PTI.

A bench of Justices B.D. Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul has fixed the PIL for hearing.

The PIL filed by Pushpanjali Das is seeking a direction to the CBSE and 16 IITs to "re-conduct JEE (Main), 2014 within a week's time and not on multiple days."

It has also sought a direction that the CBSE and the IITs not be allowed to go ahead with the JEE as different sets of question papers for the exams, which would be held on multiple dates, will not provide equal oppotunities to all students.

"The petiiton is directed against CBSE and 16 IITs for subjecting young deserving students to discrimination in the competitive examinations whereby an entrance examination in the same year is being conducted over multiple days with different set of questions.

"This results in questions of varying levels of difficulty on each day, as a result an average student may score more marks thereby denying deserving student a chance of getting admission in prestigious premium institutes of India," the petition said.

According to the plea, CBSE, since 2002, started independent engineering entrance examination known as AIEEE for admission to 30 NITs and 5 IIITs.

In 2012, Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal proposed "One Nation, One Test" formula for the engineering entrance examination.

However, later it was agreed that IITs be allowed to conduct own examination separately but only for those first 1,50,000 students, who qualify AIEEE based on some cut-off marks, the petition said.

JEE Mains and JEE Advanced: Single Exam from 2015

2015 will come easy for engineering students as the All central government-funded engineering schools, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), will choose students through a common entrance examination in 2015. JEE Mains and JEE advance which are two separate exams will be merged from next year HR ministry has decided. IITs across India have already been informed about it.

According to government ruling, all engineering colleges will have to conduct common counseling for students in 2014. Candidate who wants to get into IITs needs to crack JEE advance whereas all the government funded technical schools, including the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) use JEE Main scores for admission.

The top 150,000 students of the main examination are eligible to sit for the JEE-Advanced test for a seat in the 16 IITs and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. The two tier JEE system was launched in 2012 in order to reduce the influence of coaching centers on aspirants for the top technical colleges and making the admission process simpler for students.

Currently, first IITs conduct student counseling followed by NITs and other engineering colleges. The counseling session begins right after the class 12th board exam results are declared.

At least 1.4 million students appeared for the JEE-Main exam last year and the top 150,000 sat for the JEE-Advanced test. where IITs and ISM admit more than 9,600 students a year at the undergraduate level other top engineering colleges give admission to more than 25,000 students.

It was noticed that in the year 2012 about 600 seats at the IITs and the NITs fell vacant because of separate counseling since they receive offers from IITs and NITs at the same time.

According to Vishwaas Kumar a JEE-aspirant from Hyderabad says "The joint exam decision is a great step towards the betterment of aspirants. The effort should be to make life easier for students".

The IITs said the plan for a joint counseling may not capitulate the preferred results.A senior IIT official commented "Once the new government comes, they may take a different view than what the present government thinks," the official said, requesting anonymity."
