Online Form Submission for JEE (Main) 2014 Exam till Dec-26

PUNE: The ongoing process for online submission of application forms for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main (Paper I), which will also be the qualifying exam for admissions to engineering colleges in the state, will end on December 26.

The state directorate of technical education (DTE) has issued a notification cautioning the students, who may wish to apply for the exam, to take note of the online form submission schedule.

Till 2012, the state government conducted the Maharashtra Health and Technology - Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET), which was the combined entrance exam for admissions to the first-year degree courses in health sciences, pharmacy and engineering in the state.

However, after the government's decision to join the Medical Council of India's single entrance test called the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for health science courses from year 2013, the MHT-CET was withdrawn and the state had, instead, introduced the MT-CET for engineering admissions in 2013-14. The NEET has since been scrapped by the Supreme Court.

For engineering and technology courses, the Maharashtra government decided to join the JEE Main, which is to be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in April 2014. As such, there will be no MT-CET from 2014 onwards and all admissions to engineering and technology institutions in the state will be done on the basis of the JEE Main score.

The DTE notification pointed out that application for the JEE Main, which commenced on November 15, are to be done only through an online process. Students wanting to apply for the exam have to visit the website: www.jeemain.nic.in for submitting their forms online. Alerts related to the JEE Main are also being provided on the DTE's official website.

IIT-JEE 2014: Best Reference Books for Physics, Chemistry and Maths

There is no such thing as the one book that can help you pass your exam.

Here are some tips to help you choose a book:

- Choose a book that is easy for you to understand
- Read more than one book
- Different books may be good for different sections in a subject eg one book for inorganic chemistry and another for organic

Here is a list of recommended books for students taking JEE:

Chemistry:

1. NCERT Chemistry text books of class XI and class XII (usually sufficient)
2. Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd
3. Arihant Organic Chemistry Objective (Optional)
4. Organic, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry books by OP Tandon
5. For numerical problems-P Bahadur

JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced 2014 Exam Dates Announced

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) that met on 15 September, have decided to continue with the offline format (paper and pencil) of JEE Advanced for the next year, 2014.

JAB has also decided that the JEE-Advanced 2014 will be held on 25 May, 2014. The date will soon be announced officially.

JEE Main 2014 is tentatively scheduled to take place on 6 April, 2014. The official dates for JEE Main will soon be confirmed by CBSE.

Meanwhile, JAB has decided against an online JEE Advanced this year. They will also soon set up a committee to study the online process and implement it in future.

"There will no changes for the 2014 exams. We will follow a systematic approach before implementing the computer-based test. The board will set up a committee to study the online process and only then will implement it in future," told NK Panigrahi, JEE-Advanced 2014 chairman to a leading national daily.

CBSE Proposes to Conduct Two JEE-Mains Next Year

It was stressful enough for students when the single Joint Entrance Examination for IIT was split into two-the Mains and the Advanced - this year. Now, the CBSE board, which conducts the JEEMains, is proposing two Main tests for 2014, one in February and one in April. The final decision on this will be taken at a meeting of the Joint Entrance Examination Apex body on September 17.

A senior CBSE official confirmed that such a proposal is afoot. "The logic is that candidates can take both the exams and the best score of the two will be considered for the JEE-Advanced. Students get a second chance," he said.

An additional test will add to the blitzkrieg of exams that students have to answer, and pile up preparation pressure on them. The board exams for the state board, CBSE as well as ICSE are conducted in February. Students of ICSE and state board will have to study separate portions of the CBSE syllabus to prepare for the first of the JEE Mains, also to be held in February.

The CBSE official said it would be ensured that the JEE-Main exam dates in February do not clash with the February board exams. But that does not ease studying pressure for students. It merely allows them to take both the exams.

The other possible fallout of a JEEMain in February is that preoccupation with it could affect a students' board exam performance adversely. And this in turn will have an impact their chances of qualifying for IIT which has introduced a policy this year that successful candidates, even if they have cleared the JEE-Advanced, must be among the top-20 percentile scorers in the class XII exams of their respective boards.

While the JEE-Main exam qualifies students for engineering institutes like NITs and IIITs, IIT aspirants have to nail both the Main and the Advanced, and also do well in their class XII board exams.

Dr. Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College said the students will be in despair about what to concentrate on, the boards or JEE Mains.

"Sure, students will get a second chance with two exams, but I would prefer one exam, as it is very stressful to appear for multiple exams," said Krishnakant Saboo, a third year student of electrical engineering at IIT Bombay.

While the JEE Mains, an eligibility test for the JEE Advanced, is conducted by the CBSE, JEE Advanced is jointly conducted by the seven zonal IITs.

IIT Entry Turns into a Lopsided Board-Game: 80% Candidates from 3 Boards

MUMBAI: For long, when it came to getting into an Indian Institute of Technology, signing up with the right coaching centre was what mattered more than which school board you attended. But the new entrance exam system, which gives weightage to class XII scores of candidates, has changed the rules of the game in one fell swoop.

The list of candidates selected last week for the IITs showed that a vast majority of the successful candidates - more than 8,000 out of 9,700 - or over 80% came from just three school boards: the CBSE, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab state boards.

"More than 5,500 students come from the CBSE board. Then, there are close to 1,800 of them from Andhra Pradesh and another 750 from Punjab," said JEE (advanced) chairman H C Gupta, about this year's list. There are 30 other boards in India from where a small count of students has qualified.

"There are anywhere between five and 10 to a little more than a 100 students from some other boards," Gupta said.

In other words, if you want to get into one of these premier engineering institutes, it appears that passing class XII from one of these boards gives you an edge over competition.

Because it never mattered earlier, the IITs do not have records on the school boards that students had attended, giving little data to make any historical comparisons. Nevertheless, it is well-known that the CBSE board sends the largest chunk of students to the IITs every year.

"We always knew that many students come from the CBSE board. But we had no clue which other state boards sent more students to the IITs," said IIT Roorkee director Pradipto Banerjee.

Statistics from the IITs show that in JEE 2010, of the qualified candidates, 58% were from CBSE, 36% from state boards and 6% from ICSE. While 3.5% of the CBSE candidates qualified, it was 2.3% for state boards and 2.7% for ICSE.

In 2011, of the 13,196 qualified candidates, 543 were from ICSE (4.1%), 7,396 from CBSE (56%), and 5,195 from state boards (39.4%). "It is noted that the participation and the performance of the candidates from state boards have improved in JEE-2011 in comparison to previous years," an analytical report released by the IITs read.

Many students say a whimsical selection process has given an unfair advantage to students of certain boards. But IIT officials rubbish that. "Honestly, we had no clue that the Punjab state board would rank up there among the top three. We feel making it to the IITs has a lot to do with the coaching facilities available to students," said an IIT director.

JEE 2013 Cut-Offs Announced

For students aspiring to get into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), CBSE's class XII results this year are important, as for the first time, weightage is being given to these scores to determine admission.

A student has to be in the top 20 percentile of CBSE board exam scorers to be eligible to apply to IITs. Up until last year, a student only had to have scores of 60 per cent or above. For NITs, the school board scores will form 40 per cent of the admission criteria and performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will account for the rest.

However, relieved IIT aspirants said, the cut-offs for the JEE, which were announced on Monday - shortly after CBSE declared its class XII results - are relatively better than last year's.

The top 20 percentile cut-off for the JEE is 391 for general categories this year. For other backward classes (OBCs) it is 389, for scheduled castes 350, and 338 for scheduled tribes, officials said.

Ramesh Nitin, a student who scored 450, said he was thankful the cut-off was reasonable. "When we first found out that we had to be in the top 20 percentile, it was a scary prospect. We weren't sure how much we needed to score to qualify for admission. But 391 is quite attainable as it is only around 78 per cent," he said.

"A cut-off of 391 is not at all difficult to obtain. Most students, especially IIT aspirants, would have got a score of over 450," said K.K. Anand, a JEE trainer.

JEE Students File Petition against CBSE-Unhappy with Results

15 IIT JEE (Main) aspirants seem to be unhappy with their results. Recently, after the results were announced on 7th of May, many students claimed that they found mistakes in their score cards.

Moreover, they also raised complaints that the released JEE Main (IIT Joint Entrance exam) scores are not matching with the scores what they had predicted to be.

As a result, 15 students have come forward to file a petition against CBSE over the mistakes in their results. They have moved to the Delhi High Court against CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) which is responsible for conducting the JEE Main Examination.

The petition says "The respondents provided no mechanism to redress the grievances of petitioners who have secured a much higher score according to the solutions of prominent coaching institutions, but will be deprived of sitting in the JEE (Advanced) Exam 2013 being conducted by the CBSE as well as getting admission in any reputed engineering college, only because of institutional arrogance of respondents who have chosen to either not respond to the pleas of mercy or replied in an arbitrary and mechanical manner with patent absence of application of mind."

Students of JEE Main 2013 had recently mentioned that the board is not providing the answer keys to question sheets. As a result, the supreme court had ordered CBSE to provide the so called answer keys as soon as possible.

Following the order the CBS has hereby decided to charge a fee of Rs.500/- for each candidate to get the answer keys, photo copy of OMR sheet and Calculation sheet. According to the notification The candidates may apply for the same along with the requisite fee on or before June 15th, 2013.

The students, who have come together, will be represented by senior advocate Chetan Sharma. However, around 10 other students have planned to file interventions in the Delhi HC and ask that the admission process be stayed till the result calculation issue is solved.

JEE Main 2013 Cut Off Marks Based on Intermediate Results

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh intermediate results are declared today. But for the students who appeared for JEE-Mains, the tension continues. After JEE-Mains exam results are announced, 40% weightage is given to intermediate marks and ranks will be announced. Sixty percent weightage is given for JEE-Mains exam marks.

Syllabus for Intermediate is not common for all the states. CBSE which conducts JEE-Mains has not revealed any normalization formula. And so 40$ weightage for Intermediate second year marks cannot be given. Until a normalization formula is revealed by CBSE, the tension continues for the candidates who appeared for JEE-Mains.

For getting admission into IITs a students must get a rank in JEE-Advanced exam. candidates who secure first 1,50,000 ranks are eligible to appear for JEE-Advanced exam.. IIT seats are allotted for candidates based on the national ranks they secure in advanced exam category wise. These candidates should also be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class exams conducted by intermediate boards of various states.

CBSE analyzed the cut off data of student in top 20 percentile based on the Intermediate 2011 results. As per this analysis, cut off in top 20 percentile in Andhra Pradesh is 87.20 percent. All the student who secured 87.20 % in Intermediate is in top-20 percentile. In many states, student who secured 50-60% marks are in top-20 percentile. In Andhra Pradesh, the number of Intermediate students is big and the competition is also more. Thus the cut off is more in Andhra Pradesh.

For example if 4 lakh people appear for Inter second year exam (MPC), and they get 520 marks out of 530 marks in, this mark will be 100 percentile. Twenty percent of 4 lakh students are eighty thousand and students who score below 520 marks will be in the top 20 percentile. The cut off marks in such situation will be 94.33 for the top 20 percentile. This means if the candidate secures rank below 1,50,000 in JEE-Main, getting 94.33 percent in intermediate will be compulsory.

This is only an example. Intermediate board does not calculate the top-20 percentile cut off or the weightage for JEE-Mains. AP Intermediate board will send the results CD to JEE-Mains to calculate the weightage and top 20 percentile. Later CBSE will announce the weightage and percentile cut off.
